Trash Collection

Every occupant of a structure shall dispose of all rubbish in a clean and sanitary manner by placing such rubbish in approved containers with lids.

Services are provided by Big's Sanitation at a rate of $43.50 per quarter.  Big's Sanitation should be contacted directly by calling (724) 379-4331.  


A flat rate of $50.00 per EDU, per month, is charged to every property in the Borough

Services are provided by the Municipal Authority of the Borough of Smithton (MABS).  MABS should be contacted directly by calling (724) 872-5412. 

Currently payments can be made by mail (PO Box 342, Smithton, PA 15479), by lock box (located at the Borough building 615 Center Street),

or by automatic deduction from a checking account.  Scroll to the bottom of the page for forms related to MABS.

Permits and Fees

Payment should be submitted to Smithton Borough in the form of check or money order.

All applications submitted to the Borough will need a minimum of 10 business days for review.

  • Building Permits - issued through K2 Engineering.  K2 Engineering should be contacted directly by calling (724) 439-3440.

  • Dumpster​ Permit - the cost is $25.00 for each parking space taken by the dumpster.  Permits are valid for seven (7) days.  A "Temporary Dumpster Permit Application".

  • Fence Permit - the cost is $20.00 for each $1,000.00 of materials used. Payment should be submitted to Smithton Borough in the form of check or money order.  A "Fence Permit Application" will need to be submitted, allowing a minimum of 10 business days for review.  Ordinance No. 219 of 2018 for view to insure that the fence you are planning meets all requirements.

  • Occupancy Permits – the cost is $10.00 for every change in occupancy.  All property owners are required to register occupancy with the Borough.  An "Occupancy Permit Form" must accompany the $10.00 fee.

  • Razing Permit - Residential $100.00, Commercial $250.00 up to 500 sq. ft., over 501 sq. ft. $.50 per sq. ft.   


  • Grading Permit - $35.00   


  • Storage Fee - $35.00 

  • Street Excavating Permit -  $75.00 10’ or less opening, $50.00 for each additional 10 feet


Ordinances and things to keep in mind
All exterior property and premises shall be maintained in a clean, safe, and sanitary condition 

Weeds – All premises and exterior property shall be maintained free from weeds or plant growth in the excess of six (6) inches.  In the event that a property is not maintained and the Borough needs to provide grass cutting, the homeowner will be charged a fee of $100.00.

Accumulation of Rubbish and Garbage – All exterior property and premises, and the interior of the structure shall be free from the accumulation of rubbish and garbage.  In the event that the Borough needs to clean-up garbage and debris or garbage removal, a fee of $50.00 per hour, plus equipment and disposal fee will be charged to the home owner.

Accessory Structures – All accessory structures, including detached garages, fences, walls and porches, shall be maintained structurally sound and in good repair.

Roofs and Drainage – The roof and flashing shall be sound and tight and not have defects that omit rain. Roof drainage shall be adequate to prevent dampness or deterioration in the walls or interior portion of the structure.

Sidewalks and Driveways – All sidewalks, walkways, stairs, driveways, parking places and similar areas shall be kept in a proper state of repair and be maintained free from hazardous conditions.

Motor Vehicles – No inoperative or unlicensed motor vehicle shall be parked, kept or stored on any premise, and no vehicle shall at any time be in the state of major disassembly, disrepair, or in the process of being stripped or dismantled. Painting of vehicles is prohibited unless conducted inside an approved spray booth.
